Kern River 12/26-12/27

So the Yellowstone Crew (plus Peter) headed up to Kernville for a little fly fishing action after Christmas. We got there around 9am and fished the cemetery. We got a tip from Guy Jean's to fish anything pink and to fish it deep. Kal and I hooked on to two this morning and that was it for the rest of the day for all of us. We stayed at the Kern Lodge and the lady there hooked us up with a 2 bedroom suite for really cheap. Today, we got to the river around 9 and fished the bridge for most of the day. Kal got two and the rest of us left skunked. The worm dunkers there were killing it after chumming the water though. After lunch, we headed down to the golf course and hiked out to the river. This looked like the best section of river with deep cuts along the banks. There was a BWO hatch around 2, but never saw a single fish rise. As we were packing up Nick and Squirrelly Pete headed down to dunk some salmon eggs in a last attempt to catch fish. Peter supposedly snagged one and Nick left empty handed. Fishing was super super duper slow and am truly surprised any of us caught anything, but it was still one of the most beautiful rivers I have ever fished.

Steelhead of Soquel Lagoon

So today I went down to Capitola to meet up with some local fisheries biologists to help out with monitoring the population of Steelhead in the Soquel Lagoon. Steelhead are a threatened species among the Central Coast due to human development. In Capitola, there has been lots of development along Soquel Creek, so therefore the Steelhead population must be monitored carefully. Today we caught 20, and when compared with last week's data we could predict the population of the lagoon. In previous years there has been an estimated 6,000 fish in the lagoon; today we estimated about 300.....
SOMETHING FISHY IS GOING ON!

Truckee

So I just got out of school and decided to head up into the mountains and do a little fishing and biking in Truckee.  I fished the Little Truckee and stayed at Boyington Mills campground. Nice campground, it doesn't have any running water, but I guess you don't really need it since you are right on the river.
Definitely will be heading back soon!
